John began his aviation career in 1971 serving as an active duty aviator in the U. S. Army. Upon release from active duty in 1974, he joined the Texas Army National Guard in Grand Prairie, Texas. In 1977 John went to work for Bell Operations Corporation, the Iranian helicopter manufacturing program, until it closed.

He transferred to the Bell Flight Test Department as a Production Test Pilot, Experimental Test Pilot and Flight Instructor. He has been a CFI for 34 consecutive years accumulating approximately 12,500 total helicopter flight hours. His ratings include: CFI, ATP and Part 141 Night Vision Goggle Flight Instructor.

John has participated in special Bell projects such as a US Team Pilot at the 1978 and 1981 World Helicopter Championship (2nd Place in 1978 & 1st Place in 1981).

John was one of a crew-of-two-pilots that flew the first helicopter around the world Westbound, in 1996. He holds five FAI speed records.

John graduated from Texas Wesleyan University (1971) with a BA Degree. He was named Distinguished Alumnus in 1999. He is a life member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, the American Helicopter Society and the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot’s Association.
