D Smith served nearly twenty-nine years in the US Army where he earned his “Master Army Aviator” wings as a helicopter pilot. He has over 28 years experience designing, developing, implementing, and managing organizational aviation safety programs, including extensive experience in Risk Management, Human Factors, and Safety Metrics. He has held several key positions in the field of aviation safety including, Director of Aviation Safety Officer Qualification Training for the US Army and Director of Safety for Operation Iraqi Freedom and it’s thirty four coalition countries. He is currently employed as a manager and senior instructor by the US Department of Transportation providing Safety Management Systems (SMS) instruction to private industry, US federal agencies, and many international government personnel. Known for his innovative and sometimes unconventional approach to safety and accident prevention program management he is an often sought speaker. Described by many as passionate, he is considered a leading subject matter expert and forward thinker in the field of Aviation Safety and related topics. He is a co-author of the textbook titled “Implementing Safety Management Systems In Aviation”, published by Ashgate publishing in July 2011. He is the President and Founder of the International Society of Safety Professionals (ISSP).
